At least 20 people were killed and 18 injured in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a truck in the Indian state of Telangana, the Hindustan Times reports.

The bus, which was heading to the state capital Hyderabad, was carrying about 70 passengers.

The truck was transporting gravel. The truck hit the bus with such force that part of the truck’s load spilled onto the bus, preventing passengers from escaping.

Rescue services arrived at the scene, and excavators were used to pull people out.

According to preliminary data, the cause of the accident was excessive speed and the truck driver’s loss of control of the vehicle.
