The US Senate has held a final vote on a bill enabling the country’s government to reopen.

According to the vote, 60 lawmakers voted in favor of the bill, while 40 voted against it. The bill provides funding for back pay to federal employees furloughed during the shutdown and for food stamp benefits through the end of the 2026 fiscal year (September 30).

After passing the Senate, the bill is now being sent to the House of Representatives for a vote. Republican Party leaders hope the bill can be passed by the lower chamber of Congress as early as Wednesday, putting an end to the longest government shutdown in US history.

The current government shutdown in the country has entered its 40th day.
