The European Union (EU) is considering the possibility of changing the functions of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), including expanding its powers, according to confidential documents seen by Euractiv, the latter reports.

As per the data, EU countries are discussing the possibility of adding teams to Frontex staff that use drone operators, cyber surveillance units, and artificial intelligence systems.

Earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that Frontex’s mandate would be reviewed next year and that the matter is on the EU’s 2026 work plan.

Currently, Frontex assists EU countries in protecting the community’s external borders by providing on-site operational assistance, countering cross-border crime, collecting information, and assisting deportation procedures.
