The ban on flights in the European Union (EU) territory for aircraft registered in Armenia remains in place for technical, not political processes, the EU Commissioner for Enlargement told Armenian reporters during a briefing in Brussels, reports Azatutyun, the RFE/RL’s Armenian service.

According to Marta Kos, Armenia has not yet taken certain steps required to be removed from the EU flight safety list.

This matter is in the hands of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency. And based on their assessment, there are certain things Armenia must do, there is contact with Armenia’s Civil Aviation Committee, and as long as everything that needs to be done has not been done, the decision has not yet been made, Kos said.

This is a technical process; it has nothing to do with Armenia’s political relations. The EU simply wants to be sure that everything will be in order in terms of safety. And for that reason, it has proposed special assistance within the Twinning process, which will then be funded. This is a special instrument through which experts from EU member states who have experience in this sector help the Armenian government with this matter, added the EU Commissioner for Enlargement.
