ANKARA. - Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) Chairman Kemal Kilicdaroglu joined the argument between Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan and renowned American writer Paul Auster, and sent Auster a letter of invitation.

In his letter, Kilicdaroglu noted that Erdogan’s replies do not reflect the mindset of Turkey’s society. “Your visit is very important for the supporters of freedom in this country,” he noted in the letter, Milliyet daily of Turkey informs. 

To note, Paul Auster had said he will not visit Turkey, since there is an absence of democracy there, and numerous journalists and intellectuals are behind bars. In response, Turkey’s PM had said with scorn that he was not at all interested whether or not Paul Auster would come to Turkey.    

And the American writer had responded to Erdogan’s words by saying: “There are one-hundred journalists in Turkey’s prisons. Every country has shortcomings, but one should be able to speak to improve the situation, and without the risk of being imprisoned. This is a sacred law.”
