Turkey’s Minister for EU Affairs, Egemen Bagis, was interviewed by Al Jazeera English television, during which he stated that Turkey would apologize if the Armenian Genocide is proved by historical and academic facts.

Bagis asserted that Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan had sent a letter to Armenia’s President years ago, and had proposed to form a commission—jointly with the historians of third countries—to study the Armenian Genocide issue, Turkey’s Anadolu News Agency informs.  

And in response to Al Jazeera’s question as to whether Turkey could one day apologize for 1915, Egemen Bagis noted: “If it is recognized by the majority of votes, if it is proved by historical facts and academically, why not? Is there a nation whose history is 100-percent clean? Turkish scholars have studied our archives, where it is plainly demonstrated that no genocide was committed,” Bagis said.
