YEREVAN. – A new unit of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (ANPP) should be exploited by the Armenian side, head of Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM Sergei Kiriyenko told the journalists in Yerevan on Tuesday.
“I considered additional safety measures at the NPP. It has a very professional staff, competent experts and I highly praise the work they run both for exploitation and raising safety of the NPP. I see no reason for Russia’s participation in managing the plant. The Metsamor NPP should run the station,” he said.
As for Russia’s participation in providing equipment, the new block will be installed with pressurized water reactor. Third generation technologies will be installed in the new unit.
The technologies are used in Russia and many countries and are certified by the European Utility Requirements (EUR).
To note, currently Worley Parsons international consortium gives technical-economic assessment for the construction of a new NPP. According to the environmental assessment of the new NPP, prepared by the Armenian Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, the overall power is 1060 MW, thermal - 3000 MW.
Currently Armenia exploits one of the two units, providing 35 – 40% of the energy in the state.
