Laurent Wauquiez will submit a resolution to the French National Assembly on behalf of the France-Armenia Friendship Group, calling for the immediate release of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) political leaders detained by Azerbaijan, Armenews reports. A political trial of 16 Armenian prisoners is underway in the Azerbaijani capital Baku.

Among them are eight former high-ranking officials. The continued trial and detention of these prisoners could undermine the implementation of the joint declaration of August 8, 2025 in the long term.

The document does not mention the fate of these prisoners. Given France’s commitment to supporting peace efforts and the need to strengthen ties with Armenia, France reaffirms its support for the Armenian population of Artsakh, forcibly expelled from their ancestral homeland, and reaffirms its respect for the right of peoples to self-determination.

The international community must demand that Azerbaijan do everything possible to guarantee their right to safe return. The French National Assembly proposes that the government demand that Azerbaijan immediately release the Armenian prisoners in its custody.
