The restoration of railway sections in Armenia will provide the Russian Federation with access to the ports of the Mediterranean Sea, the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk said, RIA Novosti reports.

Earlier, Overchuk had announced the start of negotiations on the restoration of two sections of the Armenian railway, which will ensure their connection with the railways of Azerbaijan—in the area of  Yeraskh village of Armenia, as well as with the railways of Turkey—in the area of Akhuryan village of Armenia.

"The restoration of the specified sections will enable the Russian Federation to have direct railway communication with the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan and Turkey, which will provide access to the ports of the Mediterranean Sea, as well as with Iran, which will provide access to the ports of the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean," Overchuk told reporters.

According to the Russian deputy premier, work is underway to unblock all the broken routes in the Caucasus to resolve this major problem.
