Two US Air Force P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft on Thursday conducted reconnaissance over the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman, near the Iranian airspace, according to data from the aviation resource Flightradar24.

The aircraft took off from Isa Air Base in Bahrain. During the operation, which lasted several hours, one of them flew over the Strait of Hormuz, between the Persian and Oman gulfs. The other flew over international waters of the Gulf of Oman, near the southeastern coast of Iran.

The US patrol aircraft, as well as long-range MQ-4C Triton drones, are regularly used to monitor the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as the Persian and Oman gulfs.

An Iranian drone was also spotted over the Gulf of Oman on Thursday. Tehran resumed drone flights in the region's maritime areas just five days after an F-35C Lightning II fighter jet shot down an Iranian Shahed-139 drone flying over the Arabian Sea last Tuesday as it had approached the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier.
