Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said on Saturday that his country refuses to be dragged into war after Israel and the United States carried out strikes on Iran, Agence France-Presse reports.

Authorities fear that the movement Hezbollah could become involved in the conflict, after the United States and Israel bombed Iran on Saturday and Tehran responded with missile strikes.

Shortly before the start of the operation, Israel announced that it was striking Hezbollah infrastructure in southern Lebanon.

“I reiterate that we will not allow anyone to drag the country into adventures that threaten its security and unity,” Salam said in an interview with broadcaster X. “In light of the serious developments taking place in the region, I once again call on all Lebanese to act wisely and patriotically, placing the interests of Lebanon and the Lebanese people above all other considerations.”

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported that Saturday’s strikes targeted mountainous areas where Hezbollah has a strong presence. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun emphasized that “shielding Lebanon from the calamities and horrors of external conflicts and preserving its sovereignty, security, and stability are an absolute priority.”
