United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has condemned the military escalation in the Middle East, including the use of force by the United States and Israel against Iran, as well as Iran’s subsequent retaliatory actions in the region, according to a statement issued by the United Nations.

Guterres said the developments undermine international peace and security.

He recalled that all states are obliged to comply with international law, including the UN Charter, which explicitly prohibits “the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.”

The UN chief called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and de-escalation, warning that otherwise there is a risk of a broader regional conflict with severe consequences for civilians and stability.

He also urged all parties to return to the negotiating table without delay.

“There is no viable alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes in full accordance with international law and the UN Charter,” he emphasized.
