Emergency services reported that a woman was killed in Tel Aviv on Saturday as a result of missile fire from Iran, marking the first confirmed fatality in Israel since the attacks began earlier that day, AFP reports.

"Paramedics confirmed the death of a woman aged around 40 who sustained severe injuries," said a senior officer in a video released by the army, after an Iranian missile struck central Tel Aviv. The Israeli emergency service Magen David Adom made the announcement.

This was the first confirmed death since Iran began launching missiles at Israel in response to the wave of American-Israeli attacks on the Islamic Republic in the early hours of Saturday. In AFP photographs taken in Tel Aviv, firefighters and police officers are seen at the impact site on a street surrounded by residential buildings whose facades were destroyed by the blasts.

Firefighters extinguished fires that broke out in the surrounding area while rescue workers evacuated the injured.

Israel's emergency medical service said its teams transported 20 wounded to hospital. Several hours later, Israeli military reported that another wave of rocket fire triggered air raid sirens across several areas of the country.

An Israeli military statement said the air force "acted to intercept and strike."

According to police, part of a missile or interceptor fell in the Jerusalem area, though no casualties have been reported so far. Throughout the evening, AFP journalists reported loud explosions around Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and the occupied West Bank as Israel's air defense system intercepted volleys of missiles. The military reported Saturday evening that "several impacts" had been recorded across Israel.
