Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares dismissed as "absurd and ridiculous" statements by his Israeli counterpart Gideon Sa'ar regarding Spain's position on the current Middle East conflict, Euronews reports.

The Israeli minister had earlier claimed that Europe lacked a unified position on the war against Iran, and accused the Spanish government of "siding with all the tyrants of the world, as it did with Venezuela, and now with Iran."

Albares rejected the accusations as having no basis in reality. "It is absurd and ridiculous. Spain has a correct foreign policy," he said, noting that Madrid consistently pursues its position on conflicts around the world.

The minister also stressed that Spain has repeatedly condemned human rights violations by the Iranian regime and supports the Iranian people, but that Spain and the EU must be a voice of reason and seek de-escalation and a diplomatic resolution to the conflict.

He added that Spain's position is to call for compliance with international law, which includes refusing to participate in a unilateral military operation without international backing.

Albares also confirmed that US military bases on Spanish territory have not been and will not be used for strikes on Iran, as this would contradict the terms of the bilateral agreement and the principles of the UN Charter.
