Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for an immediate halt to military operations in the Middle East to prevent further escalation, speaking at a press conference on the sidelines of the National People's Congress session in Beijing on March 8.

"China adheres to an objective and impartial approach and has repeatedly stated its principled position, which can be summed up in one key message: ceasefire and cessation of hostilities. Ancient Chinese wisdom warns that weapons are an ominous instrument and should not be used recklessly. Seeing the Middle East engulfed in the flames of war, I want to say that this war should never have started and benefits no one," Wang Yi stated.

He put forward five principles for resolving the Middle East situation. First, respect for state sovereignty — the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of Iran and all Gulf states must be respected. Second, refraining from the abuse of force — "a strong fist does not mean having strong arguments" and "the world cannot return to the law of the jungle." Third, non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries — "the peoples of the Middle East are the true masters of this region." Fourth, promoting political settlement — all parties should return to the negotiating table as soon as possible. Fifth, major powers must play a constructive role and "use their strength for good purposes."

"As a sincere friend and strategic partner of Middle Eastern countries, China is ready to work with them to restore order in the Middle East, bring calm to the people and return peace to the world," Wang Yi concluded.
