The European Union will seek to complete accession negotiations with Ukraine by the end of 2027, despite disagreements between the EU Council and the European Commission, Politico reports, citing diplomats.

According to them, while the idea of fast-tracking Ukraine's EU membership was rejected, member states will focus on a long-term strategy. Over the next three presidencies, EU efforts will be directed at advancing the integration process for new members with the goal of concluding negotiations with Ukraine by the end of 2027.

However, despite the support of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, her continued active diplomatic role is raising concerns in some EU countries. Several diplomats warn of the need to avoid excessive centralization of power in the hands of the European Commission.
