President Donald Trump said he is still "far from" ordering American troops to Iran to guard nuclear materials in Isfahan.

"We haven't made any decision on that. We're very far from that," Trump told The Post, commenting on reports of a possible US troop deployment at Iran's underground enrichment facility near the ancient Persian capital.

Trump also said he is "not happy" that 56-year-old Mojtaba Khamenei has replaced his father Ali Khamenei as Iran's leader, but did not repeat his earlier statement about being willing to eliminate any successor who comes to power without his approval. "I'm not going to tell you," Trump said of his plans regarding the younger Khamenei. "I'm not going to say. I'm not happy with him."

Trump denied speculation about a possible ground troop deployment to Isfahan after saying aboard Air Force One on Saturday afternoon that "we haven't talked about that" — though media outlets including Semafor, NBC News and Axios reported the same day that such a scenario was being actively discussed.

Trump's restrained reaction to Mojtaba Khamenei came after explicit threats made before his election. On Sunday, Trump told ABC News that the new leader "won't last long" if he doesn't "get approval from us." Last week Trump told Axios that "Khamenei's son is a lightweight" and that "he should be involved in the appointment, just like with Delcy [Rodriguez] in Venezuela."
