Amid transportation disruptions due to the war with Iran, the US State Department has approved the use of $40 million from a fund normally reserved for emergencies involving diplomatic and consular personnel, AP reports, citing a source.

The State Department confirmed the use of emergency funds but declined to specify the exact amount. "We have sufficient funds to cover our efforts to date," it said in response to an Associated Press inquiry. "The administration will work with Congress if additional funding is needed."

Under federal law, private US citizens are required to reimburse the government for the cost of such evacuations, however Secretary of State Marco Rubio waived this requirement last week.
