Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Sunday in an NBC News interview that there is a "very high probability" that gas prices could fall below $3 per gallon by summer, predicting that "within a few more weeks, the US will eliminate the risk of Iran's continued threat to global energy supplies."

"Americans are feeling it right now. Americans will feel it for a few more weeks," the American minister said.

Wright added that once the war ends, "we will enter a world richer in energy resources, more affordable and less risky for American soldiers and trade in the Middle East."

Oil prices continue to rise sharply worldwide this week due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iranian authorities.

Asked Sunday whether the Strait of Hormuz is currently safe for vessels, the Energy Secretary replied: "No, it is not."

He noted that ensuring safety for its reopening is "one of the end goals of this conflict."

Asked directly whether gas prices will fall below $3 per gallon before the summer travel season begins, the Energy Secretary replied: "There is a very high probability that it will. There are no guarantees in war. The timeline is still not entirely clear, but I think that is certainly the goal of the administration."
