The U.S. national debt has exceeded $39 trillion for the first time, according to unofficial estimates.

According to data released by the U.S. Treasury, the national debt first surpassed $38 trillion on October 21, 2025. As of March 16, the figure stood at $38.992 trillion, per Treasury data. At the same time, according to a well-known online debt tracker, the figure has already crossed the new threshold and continues to rise, reaching $39.003 trillion.

Previously, the International Monetary Fund stated that U.S. national debt would reach 140% of GDP by 2031 — a level the IMF considers a threat to the stability of both the U.S. and global economies. The Fund believes Washington needs a clear and targeted fiscal consolidation plan to address the situation. According to U.S. Treasury data from February 24, the national debt stood at $37.787 trillion at that time.
