A Swedish citizen has been executed in Iran on espionage charges, with Stockholm expressing its protest, the Swedish Foreign Ministry announced on Wednesday.
The executed man became a Swedish citizen in 2019 and also held Iranian citizenship.
"The Foreign Ministry summoned the Iranian ambassador and expressed a protest. Responsibility for this lies solely with Iran. Sweden will continue to condemn serious human rights violations in Iran," Foreign Minister Malmberg Stenergard wrote on social media.
She noted that following the man's arrest in June of last year, Sweden had repeatedly raised the issue at various levels with Iranian representatives.
