Around 65% of Americans believe that US President Donald Trump will order troops to begin a large-scale ground war in Iran, yet only 7% support the idea, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll concluded today. The three-day poll showed that Trump's overall approval rating remained unchanged at 40%, one percentage point higher than in a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted shortly after the US and Israeli attack on Iran in late February.

The poll, which surveyed 1,545 American adults nationwide, had a margin of error of approximately three percentage points.

Members of Trump's Republican Party broadly support the war as it has been conducted so far: 77% said they approve of US strikes on Iran, compared to 6% of Democrats and 28% of independents. According to the poll, around 37% of Americans overall approve of the war.

Fifty-nine percent disapprove, including roughly one in five Republicans. Around 63% of Republicans and 34% of Americans overall said they would support sending a small number of special operations forces to Iran.

Fifty-five percent of poll respondents said they oppose the deployment of any ground troops, regardless of the scale of operations.
