The International Energy Agency (IEA) is calling on people to give up air travel and gas stoves due to the war in the Middle East.

The organization has issued recommendations to governments around the world on fuel conservation to help mitigate the impact of rising energy prices.

"The war in the Middle East is creating a serious energy crisis, including the largest disruption to global oil market supplies in history. Without a swift resolution, the consequences for energy markets and economies will become increasingly severe," said IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol.

The agency's list includes ten recommendations:

  • Working from home
  • Reducing highway speed limits by at least 10 kilometers per hour
  • Encouraging the use of public transportation
  • Restricting car access to major city roads through license plate rotation schemes
  • Expanding carpooling and car-sharing practices
  • Promoting efficient driving of commercial vehicles through load optimization and vehicle maintenance
  • Converting vehicles from gas to petrol
  • Using alternatives to air travel
  • Cooking on electric stoves or other non-gas options
  • Assisting industrial enterprises in switching to alternative raw materials to conserve gas
