Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi expressed “deep concern” on Thursday over recent military strikes carried out near Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant, warning that any damage to the operating facility could lead to a “major radiological accident,” CNN reports.

Grossi said the latest strikes were carried out on Tuesday evening.

As Bushehr is an operational nuclear power plant and contains “a large amount of nuclear material,” Grossi warned that damage to the facility could result in “a major radiological accident affecting a large area in Iran and beyond.” He again called for “maximum restraint” to avoid the risk of a nuclear accident and stressed the importance of adhering to what the IAEA refers to as the “seven pillars” of nuclear safety during armed conflict.
