The Strait of Hormuz could be reopened to maritime traffic “as soon as tomorrow,” U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on March 26.

“It (the Strait of Hormuz) can be opened as soon as tomorrow if Iran stops threatening global shipping,” he told reporters.

On March 25, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that ships from friendly countries — including Russia and China — were being granted passage through the Strait of Hormuz. He added that Tehran sees no reason to allow vessels from hostile nations to traverse the strait.

During a cabinet meeting on March 26, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen for navigation after the United States reaches a favorable agreement with Iran. However, he noted continuing uncertainty over the security of the route, pointing to possible risks of the waterway being mined.
