Mongolia’s Prime Minister Gombojavyn Zandanshatar has submitted his resignation during a closed meeting of the ruling Mongolian People’s Party (MPP) leadership council, the party’s Secretary General, Yanguugin Sodbaatar, announced.

“Today, during the MPP council meeting, we discussed the difficulties of the current socio-economic situation in Mongolia due to global developments, as well as issues related to the suspension of parliament’s work. During the session, Prime Minister Gombojavyn Zandanshatar voluntarily submitted his resignation,” Sodbaatar said.

The meeting was convened after the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) faction in the State Great Khural (parliament) refused, since March 19, to take part in sessions as long as Nyam-Osoryn Uchral remains Speaker. The opposition argues that, as head of the ruling party, Uchral should lead the government, not the legislature.

“The party council has accepted Gombojavyn Zandanshatar’s resignation from the post of Prime Minister. The MPP faction will discuss the matter in accordance with the law, and the decision will be submitted for consideration by parliamentary committees and the plenary session of the State Great Khural,” Sodbaatar added.

Elected on June 13, 2025, as Mongolia’s 34th prime minister, Zandanshatar studied economics and finance at the Irkutsk Institute of National Economy from 1987 to 1992. He worked in several Mongolian banks before entering politics and was first elected to parliament in 2004.

From 2009 to 2012, he served as Mongolia’s foreign minister. Between 2020 and 2024, he chaired the State Great Khural. Though nominated by the ruling MPP in the June 2024 parliamentary elections, he lost in his constituency and subsequently headed the presidential administration.
