YEREVAN. – Armenia’s economic activity index for January 2012 constituted 4.4 percent, as compared with January 2011, the National Statistical Service reports. 

In January 2011, the country’s economic activity made up 6.1 percent, and the year came to a close with 5.9 percent.

It is noteworthy that industry was the main “engine” of Armenia’s economic activity in January 2011. Construction, agriculture, and trade recorded a slight increase, whereas the services registered a medium growth.     

Electricity production in January 2011 comprised 764.2 million kilowatts/hour, as compared with January 2010, with a 6.7-percent increase.   

External trade constituted US$ 346 million, with a 5.3-percent upsurge from January 2010. And this growth was registered solely on the account of imports. The latter made up $274.4 million, whereas exports totaled $71.5 million.
