US Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Thom Tillis have sent letters to Meta and Alphabet urging them to devote sufficient resources to preventing Russian disinformation ahead of Armenia’s June  parliamentary elections, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee informed.

According to independent experts, Russia is attempting to influence the Armenian elections with a “Moldovan scenario” and is also using Meta’s platforms to achieve this goal, the letter to Meta notes.

The aforesaid senators drew the attention of Meta and Alphabet to the fact that Russia is once again attempting to strike at democracy, and this time the upcoming parliamentary elections in Armenia are the target. These elections will determine the outcome of regional peace initiatives and transport infrastructure development projects, including the TRIPP project, which is a key component of the peace negotiations. No foreign state should influence the outcome of Armenia’s sovereign decisions, noted the aforesaid US lawmakers.

While the US must remain impartial in Armenia’s democratic process, it cannot turn a blind eye to the fact that a foreign power is attempting to impose its will on the Armenian people. And when these attempts are made through American platforms, the US must not allow such interference, Senators Shaheen and Tillis noted, and they called on Meta to contribute to the holding of free and fair elections in Armenia.

And they urged Alphabet to take sufficient measures to counter Russian disinformation ahead of Armenia’s elections.
