NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has urged allies to jointly increase defense industry production to strengthen the alliance, Bloomberg reports. He made the remarks during a visit Wednesday to Turkey’s Aselsan company, one of the country’s largest defense contractors.

Rutte noted that a number of political leaders have already made commitments to increase military spending, but, according to him, finances alone are not enough to ensure security.

He stressed the need to develop the production of air defense systems, drones, ammunition, radars, and space technology.

According to the secretary general, NATO faces a wide range of threats, including the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, China’s military modernization, and Iran’s actions.

Earlier, Rutte announced that NATO countries had increased defense spending in 2025, and most of them had reached or exceeded the target level of 2% of GDP.
