US President Donald Trump will not accept Iran's latest proposal, which calls for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, but leaves the issue of Iran’s nuclear program for future negotiations, The New York Times reports, citing several sources familiar with the discussions in the White House Situation Room on Monday.

According to them, Trump has told his advisers that he is unhappy with Iran's latest proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and stop the war. Moreover, the aforesaid White House meeting discussed what additional US military action is needed to force Tehran to make significant concessions in the negotiations.

CNN, citing sources familiar with the situation, also reported that Trump is unlikely to accept this plan, which was submitted to the US in recent days. Reopening the Strait of Hormuz without resolving the issue of Iran’s enriched uranium could deprive the US of a key lever in the negotiations, the sources noted.

However, maintaining the US blockade of Iranian shipping will prolong the rise in energy prices, which led to a sharp increase in gasoline prices in the US, CNN notes.

It added that Trump's next moves after Monday's meeting remained uncertain. American officials note that they remain concerned about the divisions within the Iranian regime and are uncertain about who will retain the authority to make final decisions on a possible deal. At the same time, CNN notes that Trump has publicly expressed doubts about resuming bombing, which was suspended after the extension of the ceasefire last week.
