The US military is currently defenseless against hypersonic weapons and advanced cruise missiles. Marc Berkowitz, Assistant Secretary of War for Space Policy, stated this during a hearing of the US Senate Committee on Armed Services.

During a hearing on the next-generation Golden Dome missile defense system being developed by the US, senators asked Berkowitz to describe the country's current missile defense capabilities.

Today, the US has a very limited, single-tier ground-based defense system that is specifically designed to withstand possible small-scale surprise attacks by North Korea, he replied.

“And we have very limited capabilities to counter any other attacks using ballistic missiles, and we also have no means of defending against hypersonic weapons or cruise missiles today, if we are talking about advanced cruise missiles," added the US Assistant Secretary of War.
