I think everything has already been said and not always everything said will receive a response; we need to realize whether it will change anything or not. Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia, Alen Simonyan, on Wednesday told this to reporters, referring to Azerbaijani presidential aide Hikmet Hajiyev’s visit to Nagorno-Karabakh with several diplomats, during which he had portrayed the Armenian cultural heritage there as “Caucasian Albanian.”

“I can say something sharp now, react in some way, we can all feel good for 15 minutes, but, with that, I will harm the negotiations, whereas we have already said 100 times that we must treat peace with care, and this is the case when that care must be shown.

We don’t have their eyes to see how they see their situation, nor do they have our eyes. Yes, I am in touch with him [i.e. Hajiyev], yes, I have spoken [with him] on that topic. We are not talking about who is wrong, who is right. There is their point of view, and there is our point of view, and the meaning of my work is not to bring these points of view first and make them clash with each other,” Simonyan said, in particular.

To the question whether he had told Hajiyev that the church of Gandzasar in Nagorno-Karabakh is Armenian, not “Caucasian Albanian,” Simonyan replied: “If we enter into those conversations, where will it lead us, in your opinion? That is, is the protection of our [Armenian] identity conditioned by that? Putting our identity and peace and the processes that are taking place in conflict with each other is not right.”

When asked whether he had contacted Hajiyev after the latter’s statement, the secretary of the Security Council of Armenia said: “We are in constant contact, he has my phone number, I have his phone number, it can be said we talk [to each other] every two days. Yes, we have talked after that, but let me not go into details. I also expressed another concern that everything should be done so that such events suddenly do not disrupt the [peace] process [between Armenia and Azerbaijan]. Now also I think that we should do everything so that such events do not disrupt [it].”

Simonyan added that he is not a fortune teller who knows whether such wording will be repeated.

“I can make some predictions in connection with our political arena; but regarding their political arena, sorry, I cannot,” he said.
