The actions of the Azerbaijani soldier who infiltrated Shaki village should be given the strictest legal assessment, deputy speaker of the National Assembly (NA) from the opposition "Strong Armenia" Faction, attorney Aram Vardevanyan told reporters.

Reflecting on the charges brought by this Azerbaijani soldier, Vardevanyan said it is obvious that the Azerbaijani soldier attempted to kill a group of people—i.e. mother and children, which he could not carry out due to circumstances beyond his control.

As per Vardevanyan, the woman who was shot by this Azerbaijani soldier had sustained severe injuries which they tried to conceal.

According to him, the legal assessment of this crime should be as strict as possible, up to life imprisonment.

"It is another matter that the situation was extraordinary, the maternal instinct worked. As far as I know, the woman has serious physical injuries, which the authorities tried to conceal,” the deputy speaker of the NA noted.

Vardevanyan added that all the facts testify to the normal conditions of this Azerbaijani soldier’s detention, in contrast to the treatment of Armenian prisoners in Azerbaijan, and this should also be conveyed to international organizations.

Expressing concern about the possible extradition of this Azerbaijani soldier under a shadow agreement, Vardevanyan recalled that the Azerbaijani authorities continue to glorify the criminal Ramil Safarov, and even the Azerbaijani ombudsperson had praised him.

Ramil Safarov is an Azerbaijani military man who in 2004 had axed Armenian army officer Gurgen Margaryan to death in Budapest, where both were attending English courses within the framework of a NATO program. Safarov had inflicted 16 blows with an axe on the sleeping Margaryan. A Hungarian court had sentenced him to life imprisonment, but in 2012 he was extradited to Azerbaijan, where he was released immediately and made a national hero, and is still considered a hero.
