YEREVAN. – A group of activists gathered on Saturday afternoon in Liberty Square with an intention to march to the General Prosecutor’s office “to immediately release Shant Harutyunyan and other arrested activists” (photos).
Numerous policemen are cordoning the activists in Mashtots Avenue by making a wall and not allowing the demonstrators to walk in the middle of the street. The march started with an argument between human rights advocate Arthur Sakunts and Yerevan deputy police chief Valery Osipyan.
The police officers took away the posters with the photos and insulting inscriptions against president Serzh Sargsyan, police chief Vladimir Gasparyan, Samvel Aleksanyan and Ruben Hayrapetyan.
Valery Osipyan warned the activists against clashes, adding that the police do not want to clash with protesters.
However, the demonstrators are trying to walk in the middle of the street arguing that it is their right.
