YEREVAN. - The situation in connection with the seizure of the police station in Yerevan was the strongest unprecedented expression of public discontent since 2008.

Head of Modus Vivendi Center Ara Papian told the aforementioned to Armenian News – NEWS.am.

“After 2008, we saw what “lessons” the authorities had “learnt”:  the number of the policemen was increased 2.5 times, the police budget grew twice, great amounts being spent on tapping equipment,” Papian said.

According to him, authoritarian regimes exist in the countries which have oil but no economy. “For instance, dictatorship can exist in Azerbaijan, where there is no economy: they sell oil and thereby pay the policemen and the National Security Service. But this is not the case with Armenia. Here both the police and the KGB (I don’t want to call them National Security Service), receive money from our taxes,” the expert noted. None of the workers of these authorities would go against the people but for their salary, he added.

In Papian’s words, the strengthening of repressive apparatus will lead to the final crash of the country.

“If the authorities still don’t undertake radical change, serious upheavals may take place, especially considering the negative dynamics in Karabakh issue,” the expert concluded.
