I hope the authorities take the initiative to completely reveal the events of 27 October 1999. This is what Stepan Demirtchyan, son of Speaker of the National Assembly Karen Demirtchyan (killed on 27 October 1999) told journalists on 5 March.
“Today we need to properly appreciate the contributions that Sparapet (Commander-in-Chief) Vazgen Sargsyan made for the formation and functioning of Armenia’s army, which is the most well-established institution today. As far as revelation of the events of 27 October 1999 is concerned, I hope the authorities take the initiative to completely reveal those events,” he stated.
On October 27, 1999, a group of criminals led by Nairi Hunanyan broke into the sessions hall of the National Assembly and shot government officials and Members of Parliament, including Premier and Sparapet Vazgen Sargsyan, parliamentary speaker Karen Demirtchyan, deputy parliamentary speakers Yuri Bakhshyan and Ruben Miroyan, Minister for Operational Issues Leonard Petrosyan, as well as MPs Armenak Armenakyan, Henrik Abrahamyan and Mikayel Kotanyan.
