PreferredYEREVAN. – The intermediate part of Northern Avenue in downtown Yerevan has been named Europe Square, whose opening ceremony was held Thursday.
Subsequently, reporters asked Yerevan Mayor Hayk Marutyan the reason for having such a square in Yerevan.
“Yerevan is the capital city of Armenia, and such squares linked to foreign policy are virtually always opened in Yerevan,” he responded, in particular. “We [Armenians] have European values, and we have come a long way with Europe. This [Europe Square] will be at the center of our city as a sign of Armenian-European friendship.”
The official opening of Europe Square in Yerevan is devoted to the 70th anniversary of the Council of Europe, and which is marked this year.
Armenian MPs, senior Yerevan officials, Armenian government representatives, as well as heads of foreign diplomatic missions accredited in Armenia, and diplomats were among those invited to the opening ceremony for Europe Square.
