There are flaws in the legislation on domestic violence in Armenia, and they need to be fixed. This is what deputy of the My Step faction of the National Assembly Taguhi Ghazaryan said during a discussion on domestic violence and the effectiveness of legislative mechanisms today.

“In my opinion, the statistics show not so much the number of acts of violence as much as the bond between the State and citizens and mutual trust. Currently, the priority in the legislative regulations is, for instance, beating is considered a personal charge. Unfortunately, there are small regions in Armenia where women sound the alarm, and since everyone knows each other, they try to help both sides settle their differences. There was a case when a woman had sounded the alarm twice, the residents had tried to help the sides reconcile, and the third time she was found dead,” she said.

Touching upon the issue on the Istanbul Convention, the deputy said she had read and was familiar with the convention, but couldn’t express her position on the Istanbul Convention for the time being. “The Istanbul Convention isn’t on and might never be on the parliament’s agenda. This is why I won’t express my position on the Convention now. I haven’t even discussed it with my colleagues, and there is no general consensus.”
