YEREVAN. – Before making any changes to the public transportation system, you need to clarify parameters such as form of ownership, bus prices and brands, as these are the factors that determine the fare. Armen Poghosyan, Chairman of the Consumers' Union of Armenia, stated this during a press conference on Tuesday.

According to him, if a new public transport system is introduced in the country, the number public transport vehicle drivers will be twice as few, as it will be necessary to set an 8-hour work schedule instead of the current 15-hour, and this will lead to higher fares.

"As for the existing [public] transport, the number of [public transport] GAZelles [passenger vans] has reduced, but they still make up 60-65 percent of the total capacity, despite the fact that according to the city plan, they should have made up 19.5 percent," Poghosyan said.

The analyst clarified that the solution to this problem could be the development of electric public transport.
