For a week now, passengers in all subway stations and cars have been warned by loudspeakers to be careful with their personal belongings and to inform the station attendant or driver if they notice anything suspicious. The need to spot a suspicious person and alert the appropriate workers is due to preventive action of possible danger.

"The national security authorities are constantly carrying out preventive actions, which include plans to make trilingual announcements in the Yerevan subway. Such announcements are to be made at the stations or in the cars, which will raise the level of vigilance of the passengers," Tatev Khachatryan, spokesperson for the Yerevan Metro named after Karen Demirchyan, told NEWS.am.

No cases of suspicious objects were detected during this period. According to Lusine Kakosyan, a dispatcher on duty at the Friendship Station, passengers liked the warning announcements.

Recently, in connection with false alarms about the placement of explosive devices at subway stations, the police have also been on heightened alert at all subway stations. For example, if a citizen has a large bag in his hand, the police officer checks it with a metal detector or asks the citizen to show the contents of the bag, only citizens who have not found any suspicious objects can use the subway.

Many citizens consider such measures necessary, especially after recent false alarms about planting explosive devices in subway stations.

"I was not scared, because there was nothing suspicious in my bag," a young man told us, noticing a large bag in his hand, the police checked his bag with a metal detector.

No prohibited items such as cold weapons, flammable or incendiary materials were found during the recent heavy police patrol, the Public Relations and Information Department of the Armenian Police told NEWS.am.

According to a spokesman for the Yerevan Metro, there has been no decrease in passenger traffic after false alarms about the placement of explosive devices in subway stations.

"According to yesterday's data, we had 67,000 passengers, this does not indicate a decrease in passenger traffic, because educational institutions are closed during this period, it is a vacation period," Khachatryan said.

The frequent false explosions in the subway don't make the citizens refuse from taking the subway, but they are more vigilant and support the preventive measures taken.

We remind you that the Yerevan subway hasn't had a director for a long time. After three years Gevorg Avetisyan, the subway acting director, resigned three months ago, a new acting director Sahak Vardanyan worked for only two months and Babken Sedrakyan, the third acting director, was appointed to this position for a few days.

A spokesman for the Yerevan Metro assures that the periodic change of the head does not have a negative impact on the efficiency of the Metro management. Although, for example, the last two acting directors have never worked in the subway, the subway assures that those who have years of experience in the management system can manage the Yerevan subway thanks to skillful specialists.
