The Court of General Jurisdiction of Yerevan on Friday decided to place Archbishop Arshak Khachatryan, Chancellor of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, under a two-month arrest.
Earlier, his legal defender Arsen Babayan stated that he had no expectations from the court, that the decision was already prepared and written, and they would simply be given a copy of the ruling.
According to the Investigative Committee of Armenia, Archbishop Khachatryan has been subjected to public criminal prosecution under Article 393, Section 2, Paragraphs 1 and 4 of the Criminal Code; that is, for the illegal selling of narcotics by a group of persons, with prior agreement, in a public place.
According to the lawyer, Archbishop Khachatryan had been prepared for such developments since his recent press conference.
