I think it would be expedient to connect the Armenian energy system with the Azerbaijani and Turkish energy systems, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated at a press briefing Thursday.

According to him, the creation of a single energy space will turn the region into a powerful international exporter.

“This also will become the basis of a new security architecture,” Pashinyan added.

He noted that Armenia and Azerbaijan currently have excess energy capacity. This, in his opinion, prepares the ground for mutually beneficial cooperation.

“Armenia is interested in using Azerbaijani infrastructure to access wider export markets, while Azerbaijan will be able to transit electricity to [its] Nakhichevan [exclave] and other destinations through Armenia’s territory. In addition to direct trade, the project will provide the [Armenian] republic with stable revenues being received from transit payments, which will supplement both the state budget and the accounts of private companies," said the Armenian premier.
