US President Donald Trump is seriously interested in Iran, but he does not link it to the South Caucasus. Senior director of the Atlantic Council's Eurasia Center and former US ambassador to Ukraine and Uzbekistan, John Herbst, stated this while being a guest on the Power Factor program of Armenian News-NEWS.am.

According to Herbst, Trump has launched processes in the South Caucasus to establish peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan and advance US trade interests in the region.

Herbst added that Iran is one of the top priorities of the Trump administration.

"Iran has friendly relations with Armenia and good relations with Azerbaijan, as well as shared borders with these countries. But this element does not play an important role in Trump's policy in the South Caucasus. However, I am not saying that it does not play any role. Trump is not paying serious attention to Armenia and Azerbaijan in connection with his Iranian policy.

He is probably thinking about increasing pressure on Iran and, possibly, thinking about how Armenia and Azerbaijan can help—but this is not at the forefront of his Tehran policy.

If Armenia and Azerbaijan finally reach a peace agreement and Yerevan improves relations with Ankara, the reasons for close cooperation between Iran and Armenia will disappear,” noted the American analyst.
