Saudi Arabia has banned photography at holy mosques in Mecca, Medina, Daily Sabah reported.

The prohibition concerns primarily The Great Mosque of Mecca and the Prophet's Mosque in Medina. The ban applies regardless of purposes and includes representatives of the media. The measure is being implemented as a sign of respect of the holy sites.

Tour operators must warn pilgrims about the innovations in advance.

Saudi security forces prevented an imminent attack on the Grand Mosque in Mecca in June. Three groups, based in Mecca and in Jeddah planned the attack. According to official data, no one was killed during the operation, but five commandos were injured.
