The Armenian government today decided that the National Archives of Armenia State Non-Commercial Organization will be under the subordination of the Ministry of Justice.

Based on the decision, the National Archives of Armenia SNCO used to operate under the subordination of the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Development of Armenia, which is a unique phenomenon in international practice.

The draft decision states the following: “Studies on the best international practices show that national archives are mainly under the subordination of the Ministries of Culture or Justice of a particular country. In particular, national archives are under the subordination of the Ministry of Culture in France, Great Britain, Germany, Poland, Italy, Serbia and several other countries.

National archives are under the subordination of the Ministry of Justice in several post-Soviet countries, including Georgia, Ukraine and Belarus. The National Archives of the Republic of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh Republic) are also under the subordination of the Ministry of Justice.

The Ministry of Justice of Armenia has experience in managing archives since the state archive for registration of civil status acts of the Ministry of Justice of Armenia, which are the second largest archives in Armenia, are under the subordination of the Ministry of Justice.”
