US President Donald Trump remains a threat to US democracy, said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi following an impeachment Senate vote.

The US Senate on Wednesday acquitted Trump on both counts of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The process of impeachment ended to no avail, Trump remained in office. It was Pelosi who launched an investigation last September, following which the House of Representatives impeached Trump.

“Sadly, because of the Republican Senate’s betrayal of the Constitution, the President remains an ongoing threat to American democracy, with his insistence that he is above the law and that he can corrupt the elections if he wants to,” The Hill reported quoting Pelosi.. “The House will continue to protect and defend the checks and balances in the Constitution that safeguard our Republic, both in the courts of law and in the court of public opinion.”
