The UK is concerned about personal promises by French President Emmanuel Macron to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in an attempt to conclude a peace deal on Ukraine, writes the Daily Mail.

The French president positioned himself as a potential peacemaker in Eastern Europe after dinner with President Putin in the Kremlin on Monday. Sitting on either side of a 5m table due to Covid measures, the couple washed down the best meals with fine wines.

During the dinner, Macron made proposals to Putin that were not approved by France's NATO partners, including Britain.

Macron's apparent inability to consult with allies ahead of talks with Putin could render any agreement meaningless, the sources said.

His proposals included the neutrality of Ukraine, which excludes the entry of the former Soviet republic into NATO2

A senior government source told the Mail that President Macron did not consult with anyone about his peace proposal.

Macron's proposal for neutrality is not supported by either NATO or the government of Ukraine.

But after the meeting in Kiev, Macron said he saw the possibility of talks with Moscow and Ukraine and concrete practical solutions to prevent war.
