A strong forest fire is raging in the region of Elis (Ilia) in the northwest of the Peloponnese, the fire is extinguished by more than 195 firefighters, seven foot groups and 48 vehicles, the Greek fire department said.
The fire started on Sunday afternoon near the city of Achaia. Due to the threat to residential buildings, residents of four villages were evacuated.
Before dark, six planes and five helicopters took part in the extinguishing. At dawn, two planes and two helicopters drop water on the fire.
According to the fire danger forecast map, the region is in the category of very high risk, RIA Novosti reports.
On Sunday, 53 forest fires were recorded in Greece. The most serious were in the region of Peania in the metropolitan region of Attica, in Porto Katsika on the island of Lefkada and near the town of Karystos in the south of the island of Euboea.
