Speaker Alen Simonyan of the National Assembly (NA) of Armenia assures that progress can be expected from the meeting between the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan to be held Tuesday in Washington D.C.

"The [peace] talks are proceeding quite intensively, the proposals and discussions are yielding results from both sides. In these changes, we agree with the wording in one place, Azerbaijan—in another. I am full of hope that at the moment I see that there is progress," Simonyan said while speaking with reporters at the NA Monday

Referring to Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev's statements that Armenia is an enemy, that Azerbaijan is quadrupling the capabilities of its army according to NATO standards, and asked whether this creates a contradictory mood among the public, the Armenian NA speaker responded: "Should a contradictory impression be created jus now from the speech of the leader of the neighboring country? Aliyev says ‘corridor,’ then he says that I say ‘corridor,’ I call everything ‘corridor.’ There is a need to have to have political knowledge to understand that I don't mean that. It's a bit difficult to interpret him."

Simonyan added that, nonetheless, the peace talks have no alternative.

Armenian foreign minister Ararat Mirzoyan left for Washington on a working visit, where the next round of discussions on the treaty on the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan will begin on Tuesday.
