The primary objective in resolving the Karabakh situation is to prevent third parties lacking peacekeeping capabilities from establishing a presence in the Caucasus, stated Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian President.
According to him, while Russia welcomes mediation efforts from third parties regarding Karabakh, they must not be driven solely by the desire to assert their presence in the region.
Peskov stressed the importance of assisting the situation to resolve and avoiding unnecessary attempts by third parties to establish a presence in the Caucasus without sufficient mediation potential. He acknowledged that any efforts to reduce tension and to “help integrate the Armenian population of Karabakh into a new reality” should be welcomed but emphasized the necessity of consent from all involved parties.
